House of Bales began in 1997 with Lance Kairl keen to promote and facilitate the construction of strawbale building in South Australia and to be a resource for owners and builders. He was drawn to strawbale by its sustainable nature, its flexibility as a building material, and its capacity to replicate the features of traditional homesteads and cottages.
Lance constructed his first strawbale building in 1997 and is passionate about refining and developing more efficient and cost-effective ways of creating long lasting well-built strawbale projects. He is South Australia's most experienced and respected strawbale builder.
Lances extensive experience in strawbale building includes the construction of homes and home extensions of all shapes and sizes and commercial buildings from wineries, education centres to tourism facilities.
He has built studios, workshop spaces, garden walls and gazebos. Lance has done a bale house wrap WATCH THE TRANSFORMATION and he loves working with lime and earth renders.

As a long-term member of AUSBALE (Australian Strawbale Building Association) https://ausbale.org/ Lance has been instrumental in developing the Australian Strawbale Construction Guide and pursuing bushfire testing and reports for strawbale building in Australia.
Lance holds one of only a few builders licences in Australia that is endorsed for strawbale construction. Builders License no. 48998.
